Pledge for First Nations Treaty

August 2025

A bill to legislate Victoria’s treaty agreement is expected to be introduced into parliament in the coming weeks. The Renewable Energy Alliance (RE-Alliance) is proud to publicly affirm our support of the First People’s Assembly of Victoria’s journey to Treaty with the Victorian State Government.

Our Pledge for First Nations Treaty is below:

The Renewable Energy Alliance (RE-Alliance) acknowledges all First Nations peoples as the Traditional Owners of Country and recognises that their Sovereignty over their lands and waterways was never ceded. We pay our respects to First Nations Elders past and present and to emerging leaders.

As an organisation, we are firmly committed to advancing social justice and equality. Our work to ensure lasting benefits flow to communities from the shift to renewables includes First Nations peoples. We are committed to working alongside First Nations people to achieve a just shift to renewables.

We have a role to play in acknowledging the wrongs of the past and in proactively working with First Nations leaders to create a better future, together.

With profound respect for the Sovereignty, culture, and rights of First Peoples, we’re proud to publicly affirm our support of the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria’s journey to Treaty with the Victorian State Government.

We recognise that when it comes to First Peoples communities, cultures, lands and waterways, the experts are of course First Nations People.

To help build support for the shared journey to Treaty, we will:

  • Actively engage in consultation and feedback processes with the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria.
  • Educate ourselves, and our wide community of stakeholders on cultural, social, environmental and land practices and rights.
  • With advice and guidance from First Nations leaders, implement and monitor progress through Solidarity Commitments, including support of the Victorian Treaty, First Nations capacity building and through community organising.
  • Collaborate with First Nations groups to amplify campaigns, support policy and advocacy for First Nations justice, particularly in the shift to renewable energy.
  • Take action towards Treaty by ongoing, clear public support for Treaty, Truth-telling and advancing justice for all First Nations people.
  • Honour the principles of Treaty once agreed.

By making this pledge, we affirm our commitment to the Self-determination of First Peoples in Victoria as they assert their rights, tell their truths, and chart a path towards, and healing through Treaty-making.

Together, we will create a future where First Peoples’ voices are heard, rights are respected, and justice is realised for generations to come.
