Retirement age renewables

With more than 40% of our national electricity market already powered by renewable sources, Australia is at the ideal juncture in our shift to renewable energy to ensure that we refurbish, repower or retire projects well.

Over time, the number of projects reaching retirement age will grow. As such, it is important that appropriate systems are in place to ensure that renewables at retirement will be done well.

When renewable projects reach retirement age there are options, not just an end. Projects can be refurbished, repowered or decommissioned, and with any option, avenues for reuse and recycling exist and can be expanded on.

Our report, 'Retirement age renewables – delivering for Australian communities', is a deep dive into the current landscape of Australian renewables retirement. Through our Framework for Action, it highlights the work that needs to be done by governments and industry to ensure we have appropriate management systems in place as projects reach this age.

Read the report below, or check out the toolkit we developed from this report: 'Refurbishment, repowering or retirement. What happens when renewables approach end of life?'. It aims to provide clear, factual information to help landholders, communities and local councils understand what happens when renewable energy projects reach retirement age.
