Submission on the Energy Roadmap Amendment Bill 2025

The recently released Roadmap Bill delivers the Queensland Government’s objectives for Queensland’s energy system, as outlined in the Queensland Government’s Energy Roadmap.

The Renewable Energy Alliance has significant concerns regarding the Energy Roadmap Amendment Bill 2025 and the potential for the proposed amendments to constrain the urgently needed shift to renewable energy. We encourage the Governance, Energy and Finance Committee to recommend changes to the Roadmap Bill that will ensure the renamed Energy (Infrastructure Facilitation) Act 2024 will support a rapid and just shift to renewable energy in Queensland.

We do not support removing the goal of producing more renewable energy in Queensland from the main purposes of the Energy Act. Nor do we support removing renewable energy targets as one of the primary delivery mechanisms for increased electricity production in Queensland, and the associated removal of specific targets from the Energy Act.

We welcome the continued focus on regional energy hubs, and encourage the government to take a stronger role in ensuring that regional planning measures are implemented quickly and efficiently with a strong focus on supporting community engagement in the shift to renewable energy.

We also welcome the renewed commitment to CopperString but are concerned about the reduction in capacity announced in the Energy Roadmap.
